Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary K. Balakrishnan on Thursday demanded that election to local bodies in the State be conducted immediately.
Speaking to reporters here, Mr. Balakrishnan said the ruling AIADMK government was dithering on conducting the election for the past two years. Due to non-conduct of election, the local bodies could not receive funds to the tune of ₹10,000 crore from the Centre. Also, it was unfair to raise property tax through issue of government order without representatives of the people at the local level.
Urging the State government to conduct the poll immediately, he also called upon the government to withdraw the hike in property tax.
Stating that the New Education Policy proposed by the Centre was in the direction of demolishing the existing one, he alleged that the Centre was trying to impose Hindi and Sanskrit in a well-planned manner.
The Centre was trying to implement privatisation in various sectors in a phased manner and a situation had arisen where a second independence struggle had to be waged against the “anti-people” actions of the Centre.
Mr. Balakrishnan was in the city to take part in a demonstration organised by the party near the Collectorate in support of various demands of the people of Tiruchi. The demonstration urged the government to conduct local body poll immediately, withdraw property and house taxes and establish an integrated bus stand in Tiruchi.
