Two injured as duo try to snatch chain

Minutes after Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam’s convoy passed by Gandamanur at Ambasamudram in the Theni district on Saturday night, a woman and her husband fell from their two-wheeler and were injured when two people attempted to snatch the woman’s chain.

The victim, K. Veeramani, 39, a former AIADMK councillor, was taken to the hospital in one of the vehicles from the Deputy Chief Minister’s convoy.

Former functionary

Mr. Panneerselvam was here to participate in a series of meetings in the Bodinaickanur Assembly constituency and to receive petitions from the people.

The victim and her husband Karnan, a former AIADMK vice-chairman of Veerapandi town panchayat, had come to participate in the meeting held at Ambasamudram and had left before Mr. Panneerselvam’s convoy could leave the venue.

After Mr. Panneerselvam’s convoy passed Jakkamal Temple around 9 p.m., two unidentified persons attempted to snatch Ms. Veermani’s gold chain as she was riding pillion with her husband on their two-wheeler.

OPS visits spot

The motorcycle-borne men tried to yank Ms. Veeramani’s gold chain under the cover of darkness and in the melee, the couple fell off their two-wheeler.

The other officials rushed to their rescue. On coming to know of the incident, Mr. Panneerselvam visited the spot and made enquiries.

“The Deputy Chief Minister instructed Superintendent of Police V. Baskaran to trace the accused. He also asked the officials to rush the injured couple to the hospital. They were taken to a private hospital in one of the vehicles in the convoy,” District Public Relations Officer, A. Senthil Anna said.

The Gandamanur police have registered a case and are investigating.
