The mother of an Indian prisoner in Pakistan has urged the new Prime Minister Imran Khan to send her son back by December.
At a civil society meeting here, Fauzia Ansari said the recent pronouncement by a Pakistani court indicated that Hamid Nehal Ansari, a Mumbai resident, would be free in December.
“He was sentenced to three years [in 2015], and our advocate filed a plea that he be sent back. His petition was heard last on August 7. The court order said the day of release would be December 16, 2018. The order said he should be repatriated, subject to counsellor agreement, contingent on sufficient documents,” said Mrs. Ansari, urging support from the Pakistani authorities.
Mrs. Ansari spoke at a round table on the arrest of fish workers and the issue of prisoners organised by the Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy.
Ansari’s jail term began on December 15, 2015, and will end on December 14, 2018.
“On June 1, the court ordered that he be shifted to Peshawar. We do not know his condition,” she said.
