In another suspected case of drug overdose in less than a week, a 32-year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his house in Prem Nagar, Ludhiana, on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Sunny Khatar, was an employee of a parking contractor on Ferozepur road.
Acting on a complaint by his family members, the Division Number 2 police registered a case of culpable homicide against Sunny’s three friends for allegedly administrating a heroin injection into his veins.
The accused were identified as Veeru, Munna and Mangal — all residents of Prem Nagar. It is alleged that the trio along with Sunny used to take drugs together.
Family blames friends
Honey Khatar, brother of the deceased, said Sunny was a drug addict and added, “He was into drugs from past five years. Last year, he was arrested for drug peddling also and a case under the NDPS Act was also registered against him.”
Honey claimed that his brother was availing treatment for de-addiction and had not taken any drug from past three months.
“He had distanced himself from his friends with whom he used to take drugs. However, on Monday morning, Veeru, Munna and Mangal came to our house and took Sunny along. Sunny returned after sometime and straight went to sleep,” Honey told police.
He added that when the family members tried to wake him for breakfast, he did not respond. “We rushed him to the hospital where he was declared dead,” Honey said.
He alleged that the trio was responsible for his brother’s death. They must have given him an overdose, which claimed his life,” he added.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, central) Waryam Singh said following the statement of the family, police registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide) against the accused. He added that a manhunt was launched for the arrest of the three.
Sunny is survived by wife and two daughters.
