After a spate of suicides over the Maratha quota issue, a youth from the Dhangar (shepherd) community in Parbhani district allegedly took his life on Sunday afternoon over the State government’s delay in granting reservation to the community.
Yogesh Karke (20) had sent a text message to someone that he was committing suicide over the Dhangar reservation question, but the message could not be sent, probably because of unavailability of mobile network in the area, a police official said.
The Dhangar community, under the banner of the Dhangar Sangharsh Samiti Maharashtra Rajya will be staging a State-wide agitation from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, demanding inclusion into the scheduled tribes (ST).
The protest has been timed to coincide with the death anniversary of Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th century Maratha queen who ruled Malwa and is revered by members of the Dhangar community.
The community has demanded that the ruling government fulfill its poll promise to include them in the ST category.
