With the water level at the Mettur dam touching the 120-ft mark on Saturday for the second time in 20 days, the Cauvery is in spate. This led to flooding in Erode district and flood alerts in districts downstream of the river.
The discharge, which stood at 35,000 cusecs on Friday evening, was stepped up to 1.10 lakh cusecs on Saturday. As a result, water entered hundreds of homes located along the banks of the Cauvery at many places near Erode, and residents were moved to higher ground.
The district administration in Erode warned people living along the river banks and in low-lying areas to move to safer locations. Hundreds of people moved on their own, and were accommodated in schools. People residing along the banks of the river in Karungalpalayam were also moved to safer locations, in anticipation of a rise in inflow.
