Hip-Hop legend Missy Elliott has been announced as the recipient of the most lauded honor of MTV’s Video Music Awards, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, placing her up there with stars of the likes of Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, the 2018 awardee.
The 48-year-old singer-rapper “redefined the music video landscape as we know it,” MTV shared. She is “responsible for some of the most audacious looks, flyest choreography, and wildest visual effects seen onscreen,” read the official announcement.
In a recent interview with Marie Claire, the “culture-shifting visionary” shared that she never paused to consider the unprecedented impact that her work has had across generations.
“I was just going, going, going. It wasn’t resonating what was happening,” Elliott said.
“Now that I’ve had a chance to slow down, I look back at stuff, and I look back at my ‘She’s a B-ch’ video , and at the time I didn’t even think about it. But I look at it now and I’m like, ‘This is still so many years ahead,'” she continued.
The singer is currently working on the widely anticipated, as-yet-untitled follow-up to her 2014 album, Library of a Legend Vol. 4.
